What Happens During a Contact Lens Exam

A contact lens exam goes beyond a regular eye exam. It includes detailed assessments of your eye health and corneal shape to check that your lenses fit comfortably and safely. During your visit, we will:

  • Review your medical and vision history
  • Evaluate your tear film to ensure your eyes stay hydrated
  • Measure your corneal curvature using corneal topography
  • Determine which lens materials and designs are best for your needs

Once we fit your lenses, you will receive on-site training for proper insertion, removal, and care. We also schedule follow-up appointments to confirm comfort, vision quality, and long-term eye health.

Our Contact Lens Technology

To check that your contact lenses fit comfortably and provide clear vision, we use precise assessments and measurements, including:

  • Corneal Topography: This imaging maps the shape of your cornea, much like a topographic map of a landscape. It reveals subtle irregularities and guides us in selecting lenses for conditions like astigmatism or irregular corneas.
  • Tear Film and Comfort Assessment: Healthy tear production is essential for comfortable lens wear. We assess your tear film and eyelid glands to identify dryness or other issues, then provide guidance or treatments to support all-day comfort.
  • Meibography: We use infrared imaging to examine your meibomian glands. If these glands do not produce enough meibum, your eyes may feel dry, which can make contact lenses uncomfortable. Chronic dry eye does not automatically prevent contact lens use, but it may mean you need specialty lenses or additional treatment for comfort.

Specialty and Custom Contact Lens Options

Every patient’s eyes are unique, and so is their lifestyle. Standard contact lenses work well for many people, but some prescriptions, eye shapes, or conditions require a more tailored approach.

That’s where specialty and custom lenses come in. These lenses are designed to address specific visual challenges, correct irregular corneas, support eye health, and maximize comfort for long-term wear.

Scleral lenses are perfect for patients with dry eyes, keratoconus, or other irregular corneal conditions. Unlike traditional lenses, they rest on the white part of your eye and vault over the cornea, creating a smooth, stable optical surface.

The space between the lens and the cornea is filled with fluid, keeping your eyes hydrated and comfortable for extended wear. This makes them an excellent option for patients who struggle with comfort using standard lenses.

Designed specifically for astigmatism, toric lenses correct the uneven curvature of the cornea. Each lens has multiple powers in different zones, ensuring the lens remains correctly aligned on your eye.

This provides a consistent, clear vision for both distance and near tasks, preventing the blur or ghosting that can occur with regular lenses.

Multifocal lenses are ideal for presbyopia, a condition where the eye’s ability to focus on near objects declines with age. These lenses contain multiple prescriptions in a single lens, allowing you to see clearly at near, intermediate, and far distances.

With multifocals, you can read, use a computer, and drive without constantly switching between glasses.

Aspheric lenses are designed to reduce distortion by gradually changing curvature from the center of the lens to the edge. This provides sharper vision, especially in low-light or night-time conditions, and can enhance contrast sensitivity.

They are particularly helpful for patients who notice visual blur or halos around lights in dim environments.

Hybrid lenses combine the crisp optics of rigid gas-permeable lenses with the comfort of soft lenses. They offer high-definition vision while remaining comfortable for longer periods.

These lenses are often recommended for patients with mild corneal irregularities or those seeking the clarity of a rigid lens without sacrificing comfort.

Ongoing Care & Support

Our care does not end after your fitting. We offer on-site fittings and follow-up appointments to make sure your lenses continue to fit well and your eyes remain healthy. If you experience dryness, discomfort, or vision changes, our team is here to help you find a solution that keeps you seeing clearly and comfortably.
