Understanding Dry Eye

Dry eye syndrome occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears or when your tears are of low quality. Symptoms can include:

  • A gritty or sandy feeling in the eyes
  • Stinging, burning, or irritation
  • Excessive tearing as your eyes try to compensate
  • Blurred or fluctuating vision

If left untreated, dry eye can impact your vision and overall eye comfort. Our team provides thorough assessments and tailored solutions for lasting relief.

How We Diagnose Dry Eye

Valley Family Optometry uses a combination of modern diagnostics and assessments to pinpoint the cause of your dry eyes:

  • Meibography: Imaging that examines your meibomian glands to ensure they produce enough healthy oil for your tears.
  • Tear Film Analysis: Assesses the stability and quality of your tear film to determine if it contributes to dryness.
  • Osmolarity Testing: Measures the concentration of your tears to identify imbalances that may cause irritation.
  • Automated and Subjective TBUT: Evaluates how long your tears stay on the eye before evaporating.
  • Dyes and Staining: Highlights areas of damage or dryness on the surface of the eye.
  • Schirmer’s Test: Measures tear production over a short period.

These tools and equipment help us develop an individualized treatment plan that targets the root cause of your dry eye.

Our Dry Eye Treatments

After a thorough dry eye assessment, we complete a detailed baseline examination to identify the underlying cause of your discomfort. By targeting treatment to the specific cause, we can provide both long-term solutions and immediate relief.

One common factor in dry eye is meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). These tiny glands along the top and bottom eyelid edges produce the oil layer of your tear film, which helps keep your eyes properly lubricated. When the glands are blocked or not functioning properly, your tears can evaporate too quickly, leading to dryness, irritation, and blurry vision.

Our treatments are designed to target the underlying causes of dry eye, and in many cases, we recommend combination therapies for the best results.

A gentle, in-office procedure that removes debris, bacteria, and buildup along your eyelid margins. By cleaning the eyelids, BlephEx stimulates healthy tear production and improves overall eyelid hygiene, helping reduce irritation and dryness.

This therapeutic treatment uses okra-based wipes and cleansers to remove bacteria and debris from the eyelid and lash line. ZEST improves eyelid comfort, supports tear quality, and complements other dry eye therapies for lasting relief.

The iLux is an in-office treatment for people with meibomian gland dysfunction. It uses an LED-based heat source to warm the inner and outer surface of the eyelids to melt any blockages trapped inside the meibomian glands.

Once sufficient heat has been applied to melt the secretions, your eye doctor will apply compression to the lids to express the clogged meibomian glands. Treatment is delivered directly to the blocked glands and takes between 8 and 12 minutes for both eyes.

Intense Pulsed Light targets abnormal blood vessels and inflammation along the eyelid margin. By treating these sources of irritation, IPL helps liquefy gland blockages and restore healthy tear production.

This treatment uses precise, controlled heat to stimulate the eyelids and meibomian glands, improving tear quality and eyelid function. It is often combined with other therapies for enhanced results.

Learn more about RF therapy.

This noninvasive therapy uses low-temperature plasma energy to gently stimulate and rejuvenate eyelid tissue. The treatment can improve gland performance, reduce inflammation, and enhance tear quality, making it a valuable option for patients with chronic dry eye or poor eyelid tone.

Small, biocompatible devices are inserted into the tear ducts to conserve tears. Punctal plugs help maintain eye moisture, reducing dryness and irritation, particularly in patients with aqueous-deficient dry eye.

Prescription drops reduce inflammation, promote tear production, and relieve discomfort. They are tailored to each patient’s specific needs and can be used alongside other treatments for optimal results.

These platelet-rich plasma drops use your own growth factors to support healing and restore a healthy ocular surface. They can help improve tear quality and comfort, particularly in more severe cases.

These therapeutic membranes protect, hydrate, and promote healing of the ocular surface. Derived from amniotic tissue, they are used for patients with chronic dryness, inflammation, or corneal damage and can accelerate recovery when combined with in-office therapies.

Therapeutic contact lenses that protect and soothe the ocular surface while promoting healing. They are used in cases of chronic irritation or surface damage and can be combined with other in-office treatments.

Maintaining healthy eyes goes beyond in-office treatments. Omega-3 supplements and other nutrients support tear production and help reduce inflammation, while at-home tools like heated eye masks and soothing eyelid sprays enhance daily comfort.

Together, these strategies help preserve the benefits of in-office therapies and promote long-term relief from dry eye.

Many patients achieve the best results with combination therapy, such as pairing IPL with ZEST or iLux with punctal plugs, which addresses multiple underlying factors and maximizes overall eye comfort.
