Keeping Your Eyes Healthy at Every Stage of Life

Your eyes change over time, and regular eye exams are one of the best ways to keep your vision sharp and your eyes healthy. At Valley Family Optometry, we provide thorough, personalized exams for adults and seniors, helping you catch issues early and maintain your long-term eye health.

The Canadian Association of Optometry recommends adults under 40 have an eye exam every two to three years, while those 40 and older should schedule an exam every one to two years. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of eye disease, yearly exams are especially important.

Why Regular Eye Exams Matter

Eye exams do more than update your prescription. They help detect and manage a variety of vision concerns and health conditions, including:

  • Digital eye strain from screens and devices
  • Driving glare issues that affect night vision
  • Dry eye and tear film problems
  • Myopia and hyperopia
  • Photophobia and light sensitivity
  • Presbyopia and age-related vision changes
  • Common eye diseases, including glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration

Catching changes early allows us to treat conditions sooner and protect your long-term eye health.

What to Expect During Your Eye Exam

Our adult eye exams are comprehensive, minimally invasive, and generally take less than 90 minutes for routine assessments. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Medical history review: We’ll discuss your health, medications, and family history of eye disease.
  • Corrective eyewear check: We evaluate your current glasses or contact lenses.
  • Visual acuity & refraction tests: Using a Snellen chart and phoropter, we determine the best prescription for your eyes.
  • Retinal imaging & OCT: Optical coherence tomography and fundus photography provide high-resolution images of your retina and optic nerve for early detection of disease.
  • Intraocular pressure testing & pachymetry: Screens for glaucoma and measures corneal thickness.
  • Peripheral vision & eye movement assessments: Helps ensure your eyes are functioning properly together.

If irregularities are detected, additional testing may be recommended for a thorough evaluation.

Senior Eye Exams are Important

As we age, the risk of eye disease increases. After the age of 65, many patients notice difficulty seeing in low light or subtle changes in their vision.

Eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration become more prevalent, making annual exams crucial. Presbyopia, which can start in your 30s or 40s, also continues to progress over time.

Supporting Your Vision & Overall Health

Eye exams are an opportunity to care for your overall well-being. Our team can provide guidance on ocular nutrition, lifestyle adjustments, and preventative care to help maintain healthy eyes.

We also offer solutions such as specialty contact lenses, treatments for dry eye, and other services discovered during your exam.

Protecting your vision is a lifelong journey, and we are proud to be your partners in maintaining eye health. Contact us to schedule your next eye exam today!
